Contracted Minnesota Sweet Corn Up 8 Percent
Minnesota Ag Connection - 08/31/2016

The 2016 contract production of sweet corn for processing is forecast to increase in Minnesota when compared with the previous year, while green peas for processing is expected to decrease.

Contracted processing sweet corn production is forecast to be up 8 percent to 823,200 tons. This is a result of an 8,800 acre increase in contracted acreage, and, if realized, would be the highest production since 2012.

Green peas for processing yields are predicted to be down 9 percent from last year's record high, resulting in a drop in production from 112,450 tons last year to 102,124 tons this year.

Nationally, contracted sweet corn production is forecast at 2.56 million tons, up 7 percent from last year. Contracted production of processed green peas, at 314,880 tons, is expected to be down 23 percent from the previous year.
