Minnesota launches grants to safeguard livestock from disease
Minnesota Ag Connection - 01/29/2024

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is addressing livestock disease risks by offering a new grant program for farmers and ranchers. The Protecting Livestock Grant Program, also known as the Protect Grant, provides up to $10,000 in competitive grants, requiring a 50% match from recipients.

While open to all livestock operations, the program prioritizes cervid and poultry producers due to recent legislative changes and the threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen emphasizes the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding Minnesota's livestock.

The grant defines "livestock" broadly, encompassing a range of animals from cattle and swine to emus and honeybees. Eligible projects for funding include fencing, electronic animal ID systems, air filtration, and other disease prevention strategies.

With a total of $500,000 available, the MDA aims to award between 50-75 grants. Applications are accepted until March 7, 2024, and applicants will be informed about funding decisions by April 15.

The Protecting Livestock Grant Program is part of the Agricultural Growth and Research Initiative (AGRI) Program, supporting various agricultural and renewable energy initiatives across Minnesota.

Full details and the request for proposals (RFP) are available on the MDA website.
