Small Farm Team Workshop on Getting Started with Beef
Minnesota Ag Connection - 06/14/2012
The University of Minnesota Small Farm Team will host a Beef Management Workshop at UMore Park near Rosemount, Minnesota on July 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. So, beef on a small farm? Actually, it's
a great fit- small farms are still the backbone of the beef industry, and of the more than 14,000 beef farms in Minnesota, over 12,000 of those farms have fewer than beef 50 cows.
This class will provide an overview of the basic elements needed to successfully manage a beef herd, regardless of size. Dr. Alfredo DiCostanzo has developed a herd of about 50 Angus cows at Umore
Park, and the class will observe and discuss the cows grazing on pasture. The agenda will include but not be limited to:
-- Introduction to Beef Cattle Production and Management Calendar
-- Nutrition Basics: Body Condition Score, Nutrients, and Feeds
-- Health Mangement Basics: What every cow farmer should have on hand
-- Pasture Walk: Plant species identification, pasture scoring, rotational grazing basics
Registration, with coffee and cookies will begin at 8:30 a.m. The workshop will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at noon. The group will meet at the UMore Park Administration Building, and then University vans
will take the participants to the site for the workshop.
