MCGA, Corn Farmers Submit Comments Supporting Year-Round E15
Minnesota Ag Connection - 05/06/2019

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rule allowing year-round sales of E15. The rule would finally remove an outdated barrier requiring retailers to stop selling E15 during the summer months.

MCGA comments stressed the importance of treating E15 the same as standard 10-percent ethanol blends by no longer interrupting sales between June and September. The rule would finally give consumers access to another option at the pump during the busy summer travel season, while benefitting corn farmers nationwide. Comments submitted by MCGA asked the rule would be finalized by June 1 to benefits drivers this summer.

Through its experience with the Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership, MCGA knows that Minnesota consumers will choose to use clean-burning ethanol when given the choice. More than 59 million gallons of E15 were sold in 2018, nearly tripling sales compared to 2017. The growth in E15 use coincides with the rise in ethanol infrastructure made possible by the public-private Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership. Allowing for year-round E15 sales in Minnesota could see E15 use increase even more.

In addition to calling for year-round E15 sales, MCGA comments also covered several technical aspects of the draft rule for E15 and addressed proposed modifications to Renewable Identification Number (RIN) market regulations as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard. Any reform to the market included as part of the proposed rule could negate any benefits from summertime access to E15. As a part of the comments, MCGA included detailed technical comments from the National Corn Growers Association.

MCGA also asked Minnesota's corn farmers to submit comments to show the importance of year-round E15 to our ag community. More than 150 people answered the call and submitted comments, bolstering our grassroots efforts to increase access to the cleaner-burning fuel. MCGA thanks you for taking the time to make your voice heard!
