U.S. Spring Wheat Crop Virtually in the Ground
Minnesota Ag Connection - 05/25/2016

Planting of the U.S. spring wheat crop is nearly complete, with 95 percent of the expected U.S. acres in the ground. Planting completion rates are above 90 percent for all of the main spring wheat producing states. Crop development continues to advance at an above average pace. Seventy-eight percent of the U.S. crop has emerged, well ahead of the five-year average of 51 percent. In North Dakota 75 percent has emerged, 70 percent in Montana, and over 90 percent for both Minnesota and South Dakota. Some of the earliest planted crop has reached the jointed stage.

Crop condition ratings indicate that 76 percent of the U.S. spring wheat crop is in good to excellent condition, just slightly below last year's 79 percent. In North Dakota, 80 percent of the spring wheat is rated in good to excellent condition. In the remaining three states 70-72 percent of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition. Producers continue to report that precipitation would be helpful for crop development at this time. In North Dakota, rain was received in a good portion of the eastern region and south central region, but the western part of the state received very little. The forecast for the current week calls for scattered chances of precipitation.

Durum planting in North Dakota is now 83 percent complete, ahead of the average of 51 percent. Two-thirds of the crop has emerged, nearly 40 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Precipitation would be welcome in most of the durum producing areas. In Montana 82 percent of the durum has been planted, with about one-third of it emerged.
