Stearns Leads Minnesota in Alfalfa Hay Production

The Central District was Minnesota's district with the largest alfalfa hay production in 2018 with 520,900 tons according to estimates released by the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. The Southeast District was second with 387,800 tons.

Stearns led Minnesota counties in alfalfa hay production with 172,600 tons produced. Otter Tail, Morrison, Houston, and Clearwater completed the top five.

Big Stone led all counties with an average yield of 4.25 tons per acre. Stevens, Wabasha, Stearns, and Faribault also averaged 3.65 tons per acre or better.

The East Central District was Minnesota's district with the largest production of all other hay in 2018 with 306,900 tons. The Central District was second with 235,500 tons.

Pine led Minnesota counties in all other hay production with 62,700 tons produced. St. Louis, Carlton, Morrison, and Cass rounded out the top five.

Nicollet led all counties with an average of 2.90 tons per acre. Murray, Chippewa, Waseca, and Lac qui Parle also reported 2.75 tons per acre or better.

Yields are derived from production divided by area harvested. Only published estimates were considered in rankings of districts and counties.
