Annexstad Finishes in Top 16 in National Discussion Meet
Minnesota Ag Connection - 03/18/2019

Emily Annexstad from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities finished in the top 16 of the National Collegiate Discussion Meet at the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) FUSION Conference in Milwaukee, Wis.

Annexstad advanced to the AFBF contest after capturing top honors at the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation's Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Collegiate Discussion Meet in November. She competed this weekend against 36 other college students from across the country.

Contestants are judged on their basic knowledge of critical farm issues, and their ability to exchange ideas and information in a setting aimed at cooperative problem solving.

Contestants participated in two rounds of discussion on Saturday with the top 16 qualifying for the Sweet 16 on Sunday. The three topics discussed by contestants in these rounds were:

- In today's world, the rapid dissemination of information and opinion about agriculture and food technologies can make it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. Given these challenges, how can Farm Bureau best protect farmers' and ranchers' access to production technology options.

- As the Voice of Agriculture, how can Farm Bureau be more inclusive of all agriculture and production practices? This includes, but is not limited to, women in agriculture, organic production, fresh produce, forestry and aquaculture.

- Technology is one of the driving forces for innovation and advancement in agriculture. How can agriculture attract the best and brightest minds from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) into agricultural careers?

All of the Collegiate Discussion Meet competitors in the AFBF YF&R contest received a $100 scholarship from the CHS Foundation. Those qualifying for the Sweet 16 receive an additional $250 scholarship. The state winner receive an all-expense paid trip to the AFBF YF&R Conference from the Minnesota Farm Bureau (MFB) Foundation sponsored by Christensen Farms, and a $500 scholarship and $250 scholarship respectively from the MFB Foundation sponsored by Gislason & Hunter.

Annexstad of St. Peter from Nicollet County is attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities studying animal science and agricultural communications and marketing.

Fourteen Farm Bureau members from Minnesota are among over 1,000 attending the AFBF YF&R Conference. The Conference runs March 15-18 featuring seminars and tours.
