Jerco Announces Release of 'Planter Spade' for Gardeners
Minnesota Ag Connection - 02/19/2018

The Jerco Company of Mora, Minn., has announced the launch of their new gardening product, the Planter Spade, an innovative shovel that makes digging garden holes quick, easy and painless.

The Planter Spade is steel-plated with carbon-fiber handles and rubber grips. The spade weighs eight pounds and creates perfect 5.5-inch holes. The user simply places the Planter Spade on soft or tilled soil and then steps on each of the foot levers before opening up the handles like a pair of scissors to grab the dirt and remove it, leaving a perfect planting hole.

The Planter Spade is easy to use and relies on efficient body mechanics. It is designed to use the weight of the user's entire body, rather than just their arms, so virtually anyone can use it. The Planter Spade allows the user to see their garden from above in order to dig consistent holes, precise borders and lines. It provides perfect size holes for planting annual and perennial flowers, hostas, potatoes, bulbs, raspberries, tree seedlings and more--it can also be used for harvesting root vegetables. The Planter Spade is designed for anyone in the gardening business, home gardeners and workers in the park service or golf industries.

Jerry Nelson co-owns the company with his wife, Connie, and was over 70-years old and faced with planting a home flower bed that was over 100-feet long.

"I started on one end of my yard with a small shovel and a spade and realized pretty quickly that there had to be a better way, especially at my age," said Nelson. "I figured out a way to make a sort of post-hole digger where each spade would slide up and down the handle. Instead of pounding it into the ground, you would be able to push down each side with your feet. It would not only speed up the digging, but maintain the same diameter and depth for each hole and save my back."

Jerry Nelson is a 75-year old who spent his career as a commercial and residential contractor, who specialized in developing lots on many different lakes in northern Minnesota.
