USDA invests in agriculture to bolster supply chains and reduce food costs
USAgNet - 11/28/2023

The White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience, under the administration, has taken a giant leap in strengthening American food systems. Tom Vilsack announced a nearly $196 million investment in 185 projects across the United States, including Puerto Rico. This initiative is part of the President's broader Bidenomics agenda, focusing on reducing living costs and fortifying essential supply chains.

These investments aim to enhance the competitiveness of the American agriculture sector, providing more choices and affordable prices for consumers. They also promise increased revenue opportunities for farmers, marking a substantial shift towards more robust, diversified American supply chains.

Highlighted projects include Lone Star Bakery in Texas, which will receive a $40 million Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan for facility modernization and technology upgrades. Merchant’s Garden LLC in Arizona is set to use a $250,000 Value-Added Producer Grant for expanding its organic leafy greens market. Similarly, Lot 279, LLC in Nebraska will utilize its grant to boost beef cattle product sales, significantly increasing its revenue and customer base.

These initiatives are part of six different programs aimed at spurring rural economic growth. They encompass grants for business development, value-added producer programs, and loan guarantees. These programs not only stimulate local economies but also pave the way for sustainable, climate-smart agricultural practices.

The USDA's commitment under the administration is clear: to transform America's food system, focusing on resilience, fair markets, and equitable access to nutritious food. This strategy is poised to create lasting economic opportunities, enhance rural life quality, and ensure a sustainable future for American agriculture.
