A team of students from the Department of Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison took first place at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, held last weekend in Visalia, California.

The group analyzed Rancho Sierra Vista Dairy of California and presented observations and management recommendations to a panel of industry professionals.

Thirty-four universities and two aggregate teams participated in the Dairy Challenge, with nine teams of four students competing on each of the four contest dairies.

The UW-Madison team included Charles Hamilton, Cuba City; Anthony Schmitz, Fond du Lac; Logan Voigts, Belmont; and Connor Willems, Reedsville. They were coached by Ted Halbach, associate faculty associate in the UW-Madison dairy science department, and David Combs, professor of dairy science.

Meanwhile, Cornell University was the runner-up in the competition, with Delaware Valley University placing third.

Each member of the winning teams received a $200 scholarship.
