First Quarter Milk Production Up Fractionally

Milk production in the United States during the January through March quarter totaled 54.5 billion pounds, up 0.2 percent from the same three months during last year.

The average number of milk cows during the quarter was 9.35 million head, 8,000 head less than the October - December quarter, and 84,000 head less than the same period last year.

For the month of March, 17.8 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states for the month, which was down slightly from 2018, but more than the previous month's 16 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.61 billion pounds. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 1.18 billion pounds of milk in March, up 5.8 percent from the same period last year.
