U.S. Milk Output Up During Second Quarter of '16

Milk production in the United States during the second quarter of this year totaled 54.4 billion pounds, up 1.2 percent from the same three months a year earlier.
The average number of milk cows in the country during the quarter was 9.33 million head, 8,000 head more than in January through March, and 6,000 head more than the same period last year.
For the month of June, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.65 million head, 17,000 head more than June 2015, and 3,000 head more than May 2016.
Meanwhile, production per cow in the same states averaged 1,926 pounds for June--which is the highest production per cow for the month of June since record have been kept in the early 2000s.
